We spent many afternoons playing in the sand and waves of the north shore of Maui. My sons, Ethan and Spencer strengthened their surfing skills, with the aid of an expert wave tamer, Tide Rivers. In this quilt, Spencer is taking an Oreo cookie break (try them warmed by the summer sun) and Ethan is with Tide, the coach, while I enjoy a good read from my folding chair. This was an opportunity to expand a technique learned from Mary Lou Weidman, creating representational pieced blocks of beach-themed essentials: a sailboat, a cool drink, the VW van, an umbrella, a surfboard, and …. Its easy to collect fabrics while on vacation and every trip to Maui secured more reasons to purchase and create memories.
